Climate change is causing significant transformations in the Arctic, primarily through the reduction of sea ice. Polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting, mating, and traveling.
They primarily hunt seals, which are their main food source, by waiting at breathing holes or breaking into dens. As the ice melts earlier in the spring and forms later in the fall, polar bears have less time to hunt and build up the fat reserves they need to survive the summer months when food is scarce.
The decline in sea ice has led to several critical challenges for polar bears:
